"Mom, I am a turtle today. I need some green to wear."
Sarah Lee smiled — and reached for a silk scarf. Her son loved the smooth, silky feel. Finally, something he didn't declare itchy. Soon she was dyeing squares of silk to fuel his imagination — and Sarah's Silks was born.
Based in California, Sarah's Silks is a family-owned company importing sustainably-produced, hand-woven silks from a village near Suzhou, China. The makers — mostly women working from home — weave, dye, sew, and iron every piece by hand.
Sarah's Silks pays above-average wages and provides supplemental health insurance for workers and their families. Beautiful play, made beautifully.
