Handmade nature wands decorated with flowers, leaves and Kitpas Crayons

From the Backyard to the Bush: Nature Play, Making & Wild Ideas

Nature has always been the best classroom. The rustle of leaves underfoot, a stick that's perfect for poking, a flower too beautiful not to pick - children are drawn to the natural world with an instinct that no screen can replicate. There's something quietly powerful about giving children the tools and the freedom to explore outside, and then gently guiding what they bring back indoors.

At Oskar's Wooden Ark, we believe in play that starts at the back door. Our collection of nature-inspired toys, outdoor tools and activity resources is built around a simple idea: that the best childhood moments happen when children are making, discovering and imagining in the world around them. This blog takes you through three beautiful ways to bring nature and creativity together - from a magical first foray into nature craft, to real-world outdoor skills, to the books that spark wild ideas for children of all ages.

Make a Magical Nature Wand

There's no better introduction to nature craft than a nature wand. Simple, seasonal and endlessly imaginative, this is the kind of activity that works any time of year - all you need is a short walk outside and a few basic craft supplies. Thanks to Jess @learnandbloom for this beautiful idea.

Step 1 - Gather & Collect: Head outside and look for an interesting stick as your wand base, then collect leaves, flowers and foliage - the more textures and colours the better

Step 2 - Create & Decorate: Use Kitpas or Stockmar Crayons to colour directly onto your stick - both work beautifully on natural surfaces. Then use twine or yarn to wrap your gathered leaves and flowers onto the stick, layering as you go

Step 3 - Play & Imagine: Your wand is ready. Step back and watch the stories unfold - because every walk yields something different, no two wands are ever the same

The nature wand builds observation skills, fine motor strength and a genuine connection to the natural world - a perfect first step into outdoor craft for little ones.

Carve, Build & Explore: Real Skills for Growing Kids

As children grow, their curiosity about the natural world deepens - and so does their desire to do real things with their handsKids at Work tools are designed with exactly this in mind - proper tools scaled for smaller hands but built to actually work. Whittling a piece of wood or shaping a stick from scratch gives children a sense of capability that's hard to replicate any other way.

Alongside the making, comes the wondering. Kraul's extraordinary range of science and exploration toys invites children to look more closely at the world around them - how things move, how light works, how wind and water carry energy. From simple spinning tops to kits that harness the physics of nature, Kraul turns outdoor observation into genuine discovery.

Together they form a natural pairing for the curious, capable child ready to move from imaginative play into purposeful exploration.
