Grimm's Wooden Toys Factory Tour Behind the Scenes

Natural wooden toys

Made from sustainably-sourced alder, lime, beech and maple wood, Grimm's products carry unique traces of nature that are pleasing to the senses.

With a few exceptions, everything is sanded and sawn by hand - ensuring an organic and natural-looking design. A notable feature of Grimm's wooden toys is their rough yet velvety texture, which is the result of using colour glazes that penetrate the wood fibres and leave a lively surface. This contributes to greater play value, especially with building elements, since the individual wooden pieces do not slip off so easily. Natural colour stains and plant oils preserve the living surface of the wood in structure and feel.

Grimm's colours are non-toxic, water-based stains that are absolutely harmless and tested in-depth for colour fastness in contact with saliva. All colours and oils are certified according to the European and US toy safety standards (EN 71 and CPSIA/ASTM 963). Individual pieces are dipped by hand into the stain while rainbow friends and decorative figures are hand-painted and decorated in the most loving detail.

Open-ended play

Grimm's product development is guided by Waldorf education and other alternative pedagogical approaches, such as Montessori. The minimalist design of the toys leaves much room for the development of the child’s creativity. In this way, new fantastic play worlds emerge, keeping pace with the child's development.

Small and big builders will find everything they need to create new worlds and games ... so the same components may become a farm and later a hospital. On another occasion, a doll’s house or part of a fantasy land might be created. Children are always finding new ways to play with Grimm's wooden toys, making them permanent companions throughout childhood and beyond.
