Explore the wonders of BEES with your own DIY Bee Hotel
An #OSKARSLITTLELEARNERS Activity Tutorial by Kate Kwijas, for Oskar's Wooden Ark
September 15, 2021
Kids love eating honey. So why not learn where honey comes from and improve the children's handy skills along the way.
This week Kate (@exploringlifetogether_) and her children have constructed a Bee Hotel using Corvus Kids at Work tools and the Corvus DIY Bee Hotel Kit.
The new Corvus range offers a great assortment of nifty DIY projects that inspire and foster creativity amongst young minds and encourage them to explore new ways of originality and skills. With the Corvus DIY Bee Hotel Kit you can build a hotel for the various native bees and wasps - both you and your child will be proud of the results achieved. Building a bee hotel and observing bees and their behaviours is also a great way to spark an interest in the environment and nature.
If you try this fun activity at home with your little explorers, please take a photo and share it with us on Instagram and Facebook, tagging @oskarswoodenark and using the hashtag: #oskarslittlelearners.
You will need:
- A Book about Bees
- Kids at Work DIY Bee Hotel
- Kids at work Hammer
- Kids at work Safety Goggles
- Kids at Work Working Gloves
1. Get the kids interested
Read a book about bees and talk with your little learners about their unique features.
Did You Know?
· Honey bees are amazing flyers. They fly at a speed of around 25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second.
· The average worker bee lives for five to six weeks. During this time, the worker bee produces a teaspoon of honey (about 5 grams).
· To produce a kilogram of honey, bees fly the equivalent of three times around the world in air miles.
· The queen can live up to five years. She is busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day.
2. Construct a Bee Hotel
We used the Corvus Bee Hotel kit and tools. However, there are many instructions online that you could follow to create your own insect home without a kit. The Corvus tools are the perfect size for little hands. This is an activity that requires adult assistance.
3. Pick the perfect location
Find the perfect spot for your Bee Hotel. We chose to place ours' in a tree that was beginning to blossom as it was naturally attracting bees and insects.
4. Observe and enjoy
Sit back and wonder at the natural beauty of the world as you watch bees and other insects enjoying the home you have created for them.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this project, your little learner will have:
· Learned about bees and their behaviors
· Improved their handy skills
· Gained confidence in doing DIY projects under supervision
