Magical Wax-Resist Ocean Art
June 09, 2021
Yesterday was World Oceans Day, and we have been celebrating here at Oskar's Wooden Ark with some ocean-themed play and crafting. This wonderful wax-resist painting activity by Jess @learnandbloom is easy to set up and will encourage children to be creative while experimenting with different art materials, colours and techniques. Why not use the opportunity to chat to your little artists about our oceans and why it is important that we look after them.
Don't forget to share your creations with us on Instagram and Facebook, tagging @oskarswoodenark and using the hashtag: #oskarslittleartists. We can't wait to see your magical underwater artworks!
You will need:
- Watercolour paints
- Wax crayons
- Paint brushes
- Small tub of water
- Card or watercolour paper
Step 1:
Brainstorm the theme 'Oceans', asking children: What creatures live in the ocean? What colours might we see?
Draw and colour in a selection of sea creatures, seaweed and corals using wax crayons. We used our Stockmar Wax Stick Crayons.
Step 2:
Dip the paintbrush into the water and swirl around the paint colours that represent the ocean. Use the paintbrush to lightly brush water colours over the artwork.
Step 3:
Watch your children marvel as the watercolour paint resists the wax crayon, allowing their drawings to shine through.
Step 4:
Wait for the artworks to dry and then display them!
