Q: Waldorf Family - How did it all start?
It was about 3 years ago when the idea for the Wheel of the Year came in to my head. Sometimes when I am drawing there will be an urgency to get an idea onto paper. Often I’ll describe those paintings as ‘not by me’ - just using my hands. This this was one of those. So I obsessively worked for a day to get the idea down and then took more hours colouring and finish it. Then afterwards, I sat with it, for about 12months! I think it took me that long to get up my courage. I decided I should share the images with the community on Instagram, and it erupted. I have worked for 10 years as an illustrator and designer but I had never shared work from my heart like this, so it was really nerve wracking, but the best thing I’ve ever done. Then I thought, ‘hey they like this one, I could see if they like another drawing’, so I drew another, and another, and I just keep on thinking of things my daughters needed or ideas that I think are beautiful. Now I have so many ideas in my head I think I confuse my team sometimes because they can’t keep up! And it’s amazing because for the first time I feel like I am showing myself to the world. It feels a little like a dream – like I might wake up at some point, but now we supply over 40 shops, on 4 continents and 5 languages, which for a 12-month journey is breathtaking!
